Good Lovin' Is Unusual, Must-Have Download...But,
A funny thing happened on the way to hearing the Eyes > Slipknot! Jam. I ran into a fabulous Good Lovin'!?!?! Hey you guys. Didn't anybody notice one of the most unusual versions out there?
I mean, OK. Good Lovin'. Here it comes.... Straight forward R&R from a dead start...nothing special. Hmm. Wait a minute...no flashy, garrish beginning? No. This Good Lovin' is ALL Phil's. Boom Boom Boom. Wow! So just HOW different is this Good Lovin' you say? Well, this is as different as the China > Rider from the 6.26 Providence Civic Center. Very bluesy with a little Rooster slide at the end of a great, extended jam. Need I say more?
Other than an extremely well transitioned WR > Playing Reprise, I'd have to agree with everybody else and give this overall "good" show four stars (yes, the out-of-sinc clapping is a bit annoying at times.) Love to see a good FOB come around someday. But, unlike some folks in this review, I don't mind the lower vocals at all but, jeepers creepers TimePilot... Clear as mud is right! Bizarre having the kick drum, of all things, the prominent instrument. Jerry's in good voice but nada guitar. Very strange recording. Had to revise this review since I missed most of the strangeness the first time. Guess I wasn't listening that hard. At least Donna is kept wayyy back and does not get in the way.
I have to downgrade my review because of the poor SBD.

Bill Graham's introduction of the roadies?????
Is this the show where Bill Graham introduces the Grateful Dead crew to the audience? As seen in the movie, Bill gets on stage and calls out for "Steve, Healy, Jackson, Sparky... Ramrod... get your asses out here!!" "You're a damn good audience" Parrish says.
I'm sure it is from 10/20/74 Where is this scene located in the show?

vintage dead
this is the shit! If I could go back in time to any period, it would be, without a doubt, Winterland Oct. 1974. The band peaked - couldn't get any better.

This train fueled by LSD...
Blair Jackson writes in his book "Garcia" that on this last night of Winterland shows that "virtually every member of the Dead family, including the band, and a large segment of the audience took acid"

Clear As Mud
Phil Lesh says in his book Searching For The Sound that these recordings stem from the "Steal Your Face" recordings that were supposed to be a great double-live LP set. When doing the sound, they (the dead) doubled 2 stereo channels and then folded them into 2 channels for playback. The result is the echoed and muddy sound that is presented here. Phil begged GD Records not to release the finished product, but he had no control..."they'll buy it anyway" was the response.
I can see now what he meant. This is not good sound. One can barely hear Garcia's guitar. However, as others state, the performance is good and this is a must have for many reasons: Mickey's re-joining the band and of course, and this being the fabled "last one [concert]."
Performance=4.5, Sound=2.5, Setlist=3...3.333 overall.

The last show
If you remember from the Grateful Dead Movie, the Dead were considering retiring--they thought that this might be their last concert. You can tell that they wanted to go out on a high note. All the ballads and vocal songs are hot -- Tennessee Jed, usually just a funny song, is actually intense. Some of the songs we've heard over and over are really on: Cold Rain and Snow, Deal, El Paso, Jack Straw. Phil is in top form in Eyes. After rocking Mississippi, they go into a nostalgic Good Night from the old days (too bad there's a gap in the recording).
I don't see how one can give this show 3 stars because of sound. It's better than those audience cassettes we used to be happy with, and it's the Dead in their prime on a good night--their "final" night. Fortunately, they couldn't stay apart from each other for long.

Not the last one after all
Memories fade and roses die. Probably not a "must have" for most, and the patchwork quality of this show can be a bit jarring, but this really was the end of an era. Kinda sorta gotta have it, but I never was real impressed with this show as a whole. Can't bring myself to give it a 3, so 4 it is.

This is not a 3
Not going to be long-winded here, this is a hot show and everything you would expect from Winterland. I will never get it, a crappy stadium show from '93 gets a 5 and this gets a 3? First slipknot jam at the end of eyes. High 4.

The mix is a little heavy and maybe not so balanced in some spots, but the band was SO on! They melted what little ice may have been left in that old skating rink that night. That's where i think the 5 stars come from.

a great show indeed.. the boys go out with a bang.. if you dont get those grins listening to the china cat>rider transition.. well.. younever felt it.. the sound does have a few weak spots.. but any of the tapes i have heard over the years have the same. sound... compare this to the steal your face album or the original movie.. similar results...the band delivers the goods this whole run,, the 20th is special hey they even sprung mickey from the mental institution for the big final gig . I give it a 4 plus rating...as we go to print the folks at gd are releasing the movie with the companion cd from this run.. thanks

but the sound quality is not on par. The 1/2 Step is lovely. But I wonder if the speed is accurate. Seems too fast. Either way it is far too tinny and nasal.

This is the one
I am a huge fan of '74 Dead, and I can't think of a better way for them to end the year. The 19th is so good, but this show, despite the occasional "tinny" sound, blows it out of the water. It is one of those shows that you put in for background music, and suddenly, you find yourself transfixed, jaw gaping open, and just stop to listen. Jerry and co. went out with a bang.

What happened to the sound quality
Like all of the other reviews this was a really hot show. But nobody mentioned anything about the sound quality. Right after Eyes of the world something happened to it. It was as if the guy recording it changed locations and it was like the guy recording it was standing over at the popcorn vender holding the machine. And even if the sound was coming in loud and clear still it wasn't mixed too good. There was an over emphasis on the base. Don't get me wrong, I love Phil but his base was overbearing and Jerry's guitar sounded so far away. Especially on Eyes of the world. When I first heard this song on the Grateful Dead Movie it was so enchanting. But this recording is really bad. I'm usually not that picky about sound quality; as long as I can hear it and it's balanced reasonably enough then I'm happy. I just don't understand why you other guys gave this one 5 stars.

A Quintessential Night With The Dead
This show is a "must have" for beginning collector or archivist. The Jack Straw, Brokedown Palace, China Cat Sunflower into I Know You Rider, Wharf Rat and several other tracks are standard bearers for the period and for the ages.
The recording is very clean (and a little bit of crowd noise would reveal the magic and intensity of the evening. I have an audience recording of certain tracks from the show that plays one full step fast but gives you the interaction between the band and the crowd.)
While I could write pages about this show, you will be richer after listening and recapturing a unique moment in time. Add this show to your library, listen to it often and share it with your friends and kids (so they will know what electric music is all about!).
I'd give it six stars, but I am only allowed five.
